While it is a little easier to pack items such as the toaster or throw pillows in advance, it becomes a little tougher when it comes to clothing. We like having the ability to choose an outfit every day. However, most people don’t realize moving our wardrobe is much more difficult than throwing every item of clothing we own into trash bags. Here are some tips:

Pack overnight bags for the whole family. Make sure you have a change of clothes, pajamas, and all essential toiletries.

Purge. You can also read “Donate” here. Moving is the perfect opportunity to get rid of some clutter and make space. It will also cost less.

Pack shoes in boxes. Taking the time to pack your shoes in advance can prevent the last minute impulse to throw your dirty sneakers in with your clean clothes resulting in stains, or your leather shoes in with your hairdryer that will result in scuffs and scratches.

Invest in professional wardrobe boxes. Wardrobe boxes prevent your favourite clothes from arriving wrinkled.

Pack clothes in smaller boxes. Like books, we often underestimate the weight of clothes. Think of how fast your suitcase reaches 50 pounds with only clothes in it. Giving your mover a big box filled with your entire wardrobe will be very heavy and may cause the bottom to break.

Make use of your suitcases. This is an easy way to kill two birds with one stone. Especially if you luggage has rollers, it will be easier to move the suitcase to your moving truck and then to your new house.

Label your boxes. Know what is packed where makes the unpacking process a lot easier. Consider packing by season or purpose (example: all pants together).
